When my sister Stephanie asked for an art piece for the holidays, I gladly obliged and made something amazing. Of course, my other sister, Gina, wanted something as well. Although, unlike Stephanie, Gina did not tell me what she wanted the subject to be. I had total creative freedom. The first thing I thought of was glorifying Louisiana State University as she is currently a student there. I quickly realized that I didn’t have any connection to the photos. It was then, I realized what I wanted the subject to be.
Gina was always the one that struggled to be far from home. She used to hate sleepovers that were down the street. She always was relatively close to home. Being 1,400 miles away is quite the undertaking and I give her immense credit. That is where I got the idea of this piece. I decided to bring a piece of home to Louisiana by giving my artistic perspective of Lucy the Elephant to my sister.
The only thing that stands out is the use of font in this piece. Gina loves seeing those inspirational and motivational wall pieces that have some generic statements on it. I felt that I was obligated to add that part. Although, I didn’t want to do the whole cliche look of the pieces she likes. Instead, I drew inspiration from Basquiat. Overall, I am shocked with how well this turned out and excited to hear what my sister thinks of it (as she hasn’t seen it at the time of writing this)!
